What I learned in my first week at Bain
Landing a job at Bain seemed like a dream to me just a year ago - it’s surreal to finally be a part of the firm.
Being “on the other side” definitely feels nice, and I wanted to share a few things I’ve taken away from the first week of training.
People of all majors can work at consulting firms.
My intern class includes English majors, biomedical engineering, computer science, economics, psychology, government, and more… Most of the skills you need will be learned on the job.
The skills you use to tackle case-interviews come up all the time.
This week during training there have been several modules that remind me all too much of my days practicing case interviews. Market analysis, market sizing, profitability math, etc. If you enjoy doing case-interviews you’ll probably enjoy consulting.
A career in consulting gives you tons of flexibility in the early years of your career.
One of my trainers interned at Bain in 2012, graduated in 2013, deferred her return offer for a year while working for a non-profit in Argentina, and then started at Bain 2014. This is only one example of the opportunities you have at consulting firms!
Opportunities with Firms
Jumpstart UGrad Careers Forum
The fellowship will give you the tools, Jumpstart connects you to all the top consulting firms to put these tools into practice.
In 2018, I attended Jumpstart when I was a rising sophomore at Seton Hall University and networked my way into an interview with McKinsey - true story. This year, group case studies, internship overviews, and 1:1 coffee chats/interviews will occur at Jumpstart’s virtual UGrad Careers forum.
Firms in attendance: Accenture, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Bain, Barclays, BCG, Cornerstone Research, Deloitte, Deutsche Bank, Evercore, Lincoln International, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, Oliver Wyman, Plante Moran, Redstone Strategy Group, Vista Equity Partners, Wellington and West Monroe.
Dates: August 10-14, 2020 | Free Admission
Final note:
Connect with me on LinkedIn and include a personalized note. Leave a small intro and let me know how I can be most helpful on your journey :) I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Looking forward to coaching some of you this summer and beyond!
