This week I got staffed on my case at Bain! I wanted to give you guys a run-down of what this experience has been like.
What I am working on
My team is helping a really big company make their internal technologies more effective and efficient in the long-run.
Onboarding is hard!
From past experience in consulting, I knew this week was going to be tough. Typically when you get staffed on your project/case a lot of energy is spent on “getting smart”. This means understanding the industry and the company’s position in the industry, the company itself, the business-problem, and the team’s approach. Getting up to speed is tough, but it is great opportunity to learn a lot in a short amount of time.
My supervisor
Bain does a great job of matching interns with great supervisors. My supervisor is finishing up his second year at Bain and has done a great job making me feel comfortable contributing. Already made a few powerpoint slides!
The structure of the team
The structure of the team is different on every case. It can vary in size, tenure, and expertise. On my project there are 2 partners, 1 manager, 2 post-MBA consultants, a second-year associate consultant, an MBA intern, a few experts on our industry, and me!
What I have done so far
I’ve spent the last couple of days getting up to speed with what the team has done so far and understanding the business problem. When I got staffed, my supervisor sent me a couple of powerpoint files to go through (about 150 slides total) with context on what was going on. Today I spent some time researching a few different technologies our client is looking to potentially implement.
Feel free to send me any questions about this by leaving a comment :)

Hi Michael, thanks for sharing. I'm from Chile and I just want to ask you what made you decide Consulting over Investment Banking. I'm experiencing the same doubts you did and so far I've no idea what to do haha. Thanks!
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing, this sounds amazing! I just wanted to ask what you feel are some effective ways to learn about/understand an industry or company?
